Course Outline 

 

Period

General Description

Week 1

 

Introduction: The western world in the 5th Century.  The fall of the Christian Roman Empire to Germanic tribes (Goths, Franks, Huns etc)  The Byzantine Empire.

Week 2

400-500

Anglo Saxon Britain: Mythical King Arthur, the seven Anglo-Saxon kingdoms, St Patrick and Ireland, Celtic Mission from Iona to Scots (St Columba) and English (St Aiden).

Week 3

650-800

The Christian Tribes of Europe: Rise of the Franks. British Celtic Christians convert Holland (St Willibord) and Germany (St Boniface). Repelling of the Muslim Moors in central France and the Frankish (Carolingian) Renaissance. The beginning of Feudalism.

Week 4

850-1066

The Viking Assault: Rise of the English Nation under Christian King Alfred and his implementation of Christian ethics as the basis of ‘English Common Law'. Edward the Confessor and a Christian administration.

Week 5

1066-1200

William the Conqueror:  a Norman aristocracy, Henry II's English-French Empire, Chivalry, Feudalism and the Crusades. Relics, Shrines, Pilgrimages.

Week 6

1200-1300

King John and Magna Carta: Simon de Montfort and a first Parliament. Christian Revivalist monks (Franciscan & Dominicans) spread faith and education. Edward I brings Wales into union with England, English language survives Norman Conquest.  The Albigensians.

Week 7

1300-1400

The 100 Years War: Edward III. Age of Chivalry and Heraldry, Black Death, Christian revival teaching; Wycliffe & Continental Hussites.

Week 8

1400-1490

A Divided England: The wars of the Roses, the printing press, the Bible in English (Tyndale). The Renaissance and fall of Constantinople. Erasmus.

Week 9

1490-1540

The Reformation: Henry VIII breaks with Catholic Southern Europe. Edward VI founding of Protestant England, monasteries dissolved, new grammar schools built.

Week 10

Chris Nicholson

Chris Nicholson originates from a Farming background in the West Country from where he went on to study Geology at University to Master’s level. Chris has worked as a Geologist in the Oil and Gas business for 17 years in the North Sea, London, Pakistan and Libya. In 2003 he completed a degree in Theology and went on to complete a part-time Masters degree focussing on British History. He is in the process of writing a book on the subject aimed to be published in 2009. For the last 5 years Chris has worked full time variously with Teen Challenge drug re-hab program, Asylum Seeker Support and is currently working with Social Services as a Children’s Contact Officer. Chris is married to his wife, Ruhamah, whom he met in Pakistan. They have 3 delightful children.
